2020 12th Generation Toyota Corolla sedan

The arrow-shaped LED headlamps, with integrated DRL elements, flow towards the centrally-mounted Toyota emblem

Nicknamed "The Rolla" by my best friend Brian, Toyota has revealed their 12th generation sleek looking Corolla with pricing for the South African market.

Built on their TNGA (GA-C) platform which offers great comfort and ride handling, the 12th Gen Corolla will be offered in two grades which will have three models (see below for model types & pricing) and Toyota is offering quite a lot of features in the models with Standard features like Automatic climate control, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, multi-function leather-covered steering wheel, partial leather seat upholstery, seven airbags, ESP stability control and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Top spec XR models gain 18-inch ultra-stylish turbine-shaped alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, electro-chromatic rearview mirror, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert and the brake-synchronised Pre-Crash system, Bi-LED headlights with automatic high-beam, leather upholstery and in the CVT models, paddle shifters.

New diamond-cut alloys

The models also come with a Display Audio touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera and Android Auto / CarPlay connectivity, that is a lot of bang for your buck especially considering that these are optional extras at other manufacturers within the same segment.

    The Toyota Corolla has two engine variants which are both naturally aspirated;

    • A 1.8-litre carried from the previous generation which delivers 103kW and 171Nm matted to a 7-speed’ Shiftmatic CVT transmission.
    • A 2.0-litre ‘Dynamic Force' which delivers 125kW and 200Nm and is offered in a 10-speed’ Shiftmatic CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission.

    Toyota has said that the engines are focusing strongly on fuel consumption and the claimed fuel consumption figures are not that bad with the 1.8-litre being listed at a claimed 6.2 l/100 km, the 2.0-litre manual at 6.5 and finally the 2.0-litre CVT at 6.0 l/100 km.
