BMW South Africa Unveils the 2 Series Gran Coupe
The four-door Coupe variant is not something new within the BMW family, we have seen the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the 6 Series Gran Coupe, as well as the 8 Series Gran Coupe, all models which are thriving in the four-door coupe segments.
The BMW 2 Series was first launched in 2014, and they came in different variants, Coupe, Cabriolet as well as an Active Tourer which was a compact MPV.
The 2 Series Coupe became a success and sold a lot of units in South Africa, it was just a well-loved car. Now in 2020, BMW South Africa has revealed the first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupe which made its debut in October 2019.
Although order books have been opened and you might have been seeing them on the roads, BMW South Africa has officially launched the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
Exterior
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe features a front end which is identical to its sibling the 1 Series. The slightly angled headlights all come standard as full LED. The BMW four-eyed face draws attention to the familiar BMW kidney grille, which takes the form of a large and connected element.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with four frameless side windows while the rear lights extend well into the centre of the rear end, merging into a High-gloss Black band that runs up to and encircles the centrally located BMW badge.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is appealing and looks sporty, it looks even better in the M235i xDrive variant.
Interior
The interior of the 2 Series Gran Coupe is nothing new within the BMW family, similar to all its siblings and having adopted the new design language, the interior is driver-focused with premium material all around.
Space has also not been compromised regardless of its low-slung, sporty appearance, passengers have been well catered for and it can comfortably fit four adults and this is all thanks to its 2,670‑mm wheelbase. The boot is also able to accommodate 430-litres of luggage.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has a host of innovative driver assistance systems filtering down from higher models. The Lane Departure Warning system with active lane return is optional, along with Active Cruise Control, the Driving Assistant including Lane Change Warning, rear collision warning and crossing traffic warning, plus the innovative reversing assistant.
Customers who opt for the BMW Digital Key are able to lock and unlock the car from their smartphone and also start the engine as soon as the smartphone is placed in the tray.
Engines
There is one diesel and two petrol engines are available for the 2 Series Gran Coupe:
- BMW 218i - A three-cylinder petrol which produces 103 kW and 220nm of torque.
- BMW 220d - A four-cylinder diesel which produces 140kW and 400nm of torque.
- BMW M235i xDrive - A four-cylinder petrol which produces 225kW and 450nm of torque.
While Customers can choose from three equipment lines: Basic, Sport Line and M Sport for the 218i and 220d, The M235i xDrive range-topper has an M Sport body kit with three-dimensional mesh replacing the bars in the kidney grille, this is inspired by racing cars and adds an alluring visual feature.
The M235i xDrive includes BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, M Sport steering and M Sport brakes. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission also features a Launch Control mode.
