Kia has been redefining automotive design, offering vehicles that blend style, functionality, and performance. The updated Kia Sonet, a popular subcompact crossover, is no exception. This new model brings enhanced styling, thoughtful engineering, and impressive features that aim to capture the hearts of young professionals and small families alike.
Design:
From the front, the updated Sonet is strikingly reminiscent of its bigger sibling, the Kia Sorento, well in my eyes. Its redesigned fascia exudes a sense of elegance, thanks to Kia’s signature tiger-nose grille, flanked by LED headlamps and daytime running lights (standard only on the top-spec SX model). The redesigned front bumper adds muscular contours to the compact crossover, perfectly balancing a bold and sleek aesthetic.
The side profile showcases stylish 16-inch alloy wheels (on the SX trim) and body cladding that emphasizes its SUV character. The contrasting black roof, roof rails (non-functional but visually appealing), and black side mirrors add a sporty touch. At the rear, the Sonet stands out with a functional light bar (exclusive to higher trims), a subtle boot spoiler, and a redesigned bumper that complements the overall visual package.
Interior:
Step inside, and the Sonet greets you with a refined cabin that punches above its price point. Top-spec SX models boast quilted faux-leather seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a multifunctional steering wheel with lane-keep assist and cruise control.
The cabin feels surprisingly spacious for a vehicle of its size, offering ample headroom and legroom. Practical touches like wireless charging, clever storage compartments, and premium build quality make it a joy to spend time in. However, a glaring omission is the absence of a sunroof, a feature which I think would have been an amazing touch.
Performance:
Under the hood, the Kia Sonet SX is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering 85 kW and 144 Nm of torque. While these numbers may not ignite excitement, the car’s lightweight (approximately 1,200 kg) ensures nimble handling and respectable performance for daily city commutes.
The engine is paired with a CVT gearbox, which, while smooth under most conditions, occasionally struggles with noisy whines and delayed responsiveness during spirited driving. It’s a minor drawback, but it might deter drivers who crave a more dynamic experience even though I think Sonet buyers aren't really seeking a dynamic driving experience. I took the car for what it is and really enjoyed the driving experience. For those seeking extra punch though, Kia offers a 1.0L turbocharged engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission in lower trims.
Ride and Handling
The Sonet excels in ride comfort, soaking up road imperfections with ease. It feels stable and composed, even on uneven terrain. The steering is light and precise, making it ideal for urban maneuverability. However, the lane-keep assist can be intrusive and needs manual deactivation after each start, which might irritate some drivers.
Practicality and Features
With a 380L boot capacity, the Sonet provides sufficient storage for weekend getaways or grocery runs. The manually operated boot, while not as convenient as an electric one, keeps costs in check. Thoughtful details like illuminated vanity mirrors and advanced safety features ensure convenience and peace of mind.
Value for Money
The entry-level Kia Sonet starts at R299 995, while the top-spec SX trim comes in at a steep R484 995. While this pricing might raise eyebrows, the Sonet justifies its premium with a stylish design, feature-rich interior, and commendable performance.
Verdict: Cooking with Precision
Kia has crafted a subcompact crossover that appeals to a wide audience. Whether you're after an entry-level manual variant, a sporty turbocharged model, or the fully loaded SX, there's a Sonet for every budget and taste.
Despite its minor shortcomings (notably the CVT and lack of a sunroof), the Kia Sonet is undeniably one of the most stylish and versatile offerings in its segment. With its updated design and tech-laden cabin, the Sonet is a solid choice in a highly contested segment.
