Exterior:
At first glance, the 2024 facelifted GLA may not seem drastically different from its predecessor, but a closer look reveals a series of subtle yet sophisticated updates. A newly revised front grille and bumper give the car a fresher, more aggressive stance. The sleek LED headlights, now standard with High-Performance LED technology, provide excellent visibility while enhancing the overall visual appeal.

Our test unit was equipped with the AMG Line package, which adds a sportier edge with distinctive AMG styling cues. From the more pronounced vents to the aerodynamic front lip and 19-inch AMG wheels (an upgrade from the standard 18-inch alloys), the GLA 200d is a confident figure on the road.

At the rear, the redesigned taillights and integrated rear diffuser add to the vehicle's modern aesthetic. The electric tailgate reveals a moderately sized boot, adequate for day-to-day needs but not class-leading in terms of cargo space (435 litres). As a whole, the GLA 200d presents itself as a clean and stylish compact SUV, perfect for those who value design and subtlety over flashy, overtly aggressive looks.

Interior:
Step inside the GLA 200d, and you're immediately greeted by a well-appointed, premium cabin. Mercedes-Benz has done an excellent job in blending luxurious materials with a sporty atmosphere, especially with the AMG Line seats. These suede-cloth seats not only look good but also offer exceptional comfort, hugging the driver and passengers alike. The cabin’s space is well-utilized, and despite its compact exterior, the GLA offers decent rear legroom, accommodating taller passengers.

Dominating the dashboard are the dual 10.25-inch screens, part of Mercedes’ renowned MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system. The touchscreens are crisp, responsive, and intuitive to use, though it's worth noting that the dual 10.25-inch screen setup is an optional extra. The base model comes with a combination of a 7-inch and a 10.25-inch screen.

The GLA’s cabin also features physical controls for climate control, an increasingly rare feature in modern vehicles but one that many drivers will appreciate for its ease of use. Wireless phone charging, multiple USB-C ports (though there are no traditional USB-A ports), and ambient lighting are standard features, with the latter creating a sophisticated atmosphere, especially at night. The panoramic sunroof further adds to the cabin’s airy feel, letting in plenty of natural light.

Performance and Driving Dynamics:
Under the hood, the GLA 200d is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, delivering 110 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. It’s paired with Mercedes’ 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which improves fuel efficiency and smooths out the stop-start function during city driving. Mercedes-Benz claims a fuel consumption figure of 5.1 litres per 100 km, and in real-world driving we managed to average 6.5l/100km which can get lower with a light foot on the accelerator.

On the road, the GLA200d feels nimble and composed. The engine is punchy enough for city driving and highway cruising, and the 8-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth shifts, keeping the engine within its optimal power band. The diesel engine's mid-range torque makes overtaking easy, and the overall driving experience is relaxed and controlled.

One downside, however, is the suspension setup, which feels stiffer than expected. While the suspension helps improve handling around corners, it does result in a slightly harsher ride over bumps and uneven surfaces in your everyday city driving scenarios.

Practicality and Technology:
The GLA 200d offers enough practicality for most buyers, though it’s important to manage expectations. With a boot capacity of 435 litres, it’s spacious enough for shopping runs or weekend getaways, but larger families or those with more extensive cargo needs may find it a bit limiting. The rear seats do fold down, increasing storage capacity, but the load floor is not completely flat, which may make transporting bulkier items a challenge.

Technology-wise, Mercedes-Benz has equipped the GLA 200d with a plethora of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera, which makes parking in tight spaces a breeze. The MBUX infotainment system continues to impress with its voice-activated controls.

Verdict:
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d is an excellent entry point into the world of luxury crossovers. Its design updates keep it looking fresh, while the interior delivers the comfort and high-end feel expected of a Mercedes. The engine, although not the most powerful, is fuel-efficient and more than capable of handling daily driving demands.

However, the stiff ride, and the premium price tag compared to rivals like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 may give some buyers a pause. The Mercedes Benz GLA is priced from ,At a starting price of R839 896 which it’s on the pricier side of the segment but this is a premium crossover after all. That said, if you’re a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast who values design, efficiency, and a premium driving experience, the GLA 200d will not disappoint. It’s a well-rounded and stylish compact crossover, but one that comes at a price.
