Double cab bakkies have taken over almost every household now, and while that may be the case, the are people who still prefer the single cabs for their day to day lives as well as their workhorses.
I spent a week sampling the new GWM P-Series single cab in its DLX 4x4 top specification guise and the eyes I gathered during the week just shows how much GWM has put into its bakkies. While the Double cab luxury tourer has been the talk of the town and bakkie of the year for me, the single cab is also nothing short of amazing. Fitted with a lot of luxury touches in the interior such as 6-way electrically adjustable driver seats, a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android auto(although it was very bright at night even in its lowest brightness level), auto lights and wipers, climate control, 2 USB ports and a 12V charging socket, various driver aids, stitched leather interior and a soft-touch dashboard.
The big and imposing single cab is no slouch, pushing 120kw/400nm through its 2.0-litre turbo Diesel engine that’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission (all single cab variants receive manual transmissions). Power feels extremely great, the option of also switching between 2H and 4H/L means that you are able to push the big single cab in all terrains. In fact, I preferred it better off-road, during the launch as we put it through extreme off-road conditions and it excelled without breaking a sweat. While I was overly impressed with the single cab, the fuel department impressed me even more, with a range of over 700KMs on a single tank, the big bakkie is very economical and would make financial sense for those looking at single cabs.
Styling? You will not miss the GWM, it has a lot of road presence, The big commercial grille upfront with the new logo ensures this. The load bed is over two meters long and this makes it the biggest load bed of any bakkie I’ve experienced. I am however not a fan of the rails which have been put and I feel they could’ve done without this. Another thing I feel needed was a grab handle on the driver side as it is quite a mission for shorter people to get into the cabin.
What I liked:
- Drive train
- Interior
- Fuel economy
- Cruise Control
What I didn’t like:
- Lack of Driver Grab handle
- Infotainment Screen brightness
