Launch: Refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLE Coupe
Launch: Refreshed Mercedes Benz GLE and GLE Coupe
Mercedes-Benz has revamped the exterior, interior, technology, and equipment of the GLE from the 2018 model generation. The engine line-up has been fully electrified, featuring mild hybrids equipped with a 48-volt system and Integrated Starter Generator (ISG). With these enhancements, most models now boast more power than their predecessors. At the media launch of the GLE and GLE Coupe, which was held at George (Western Cape), we tested out the GLE 450 d 4MATIC which embodies a flawless balance between raw power and efficiency.
Quick facts:
- 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine (270kW/750Nm)
- 9-speed automatic transmission
- All-wheel drive (4MATIC)
- Combined fuel consumption (WLTP) 7.6 – 8.6 l/100km
- 2nd generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system
Introduction:
The exterior design of the GLE has been subtly modified, featuring a refreshed front bumper design, an upgraded grille, redesigned lighting elements, and refreshed wheel designs. A new steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls on the spokes has been introduced. Additionally, the GLE has the second generation of Mercedes' MBUX infotainment interface, now equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Performance:
The GLE 450 d 4MATIC is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with an output of 270kW and 750Nm (Power and Torque respectively) that is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive (4MATIC). The GLE is also powered by a 48-volt mild hybrid battery. This powertrain gives the GLE 450 d a potent punch while remaining efficient.
Exterior:
Several nuanced alterations to the exterior enhance the modern aesthetics of GLE. The updated front bumper lends a more commanding presence. Chrome-inserted horizontal louvres now adorn the radiator grille of the GLE, while the outer air intakes feature a horizontal chrome finish. Characteristic of Mercedes-Benz, the headlights boast a distinct light flare. With the standard LED High-Performance headlights, two light points complement the unique daytime running light signature, while the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlights feature four light points. Additionally, the designers have revamped the interior of the taillights. Furthermore, there are fresh additions to the colour palette.
Interior:
This refreshed GLE features the cutting-edge steering wheel of the latest generation, equipped with sensor surfaces on its horizontal spokes. These touch-sensitive elements on both sides allow the driver to control the driver and central displays directly from the steering wheel. A striking highlight within the interior is the chrome finish adorning the centre and side air vents. The trim options remain diverse, ranging from classic to progressive. Introduced from the Mercedes-Maybach GLS and now available for the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé is the "MANUFAKTUR piano lacquer black flowing lines" trim. Opting for black appointments provides seats finished in nappa leather.
The ambient lighting system offers a selection of colours and palettes similar to those found in the S-Class. Additionally, two USB ports (optional) with a power output of 100 W each are conveniently located in the rear armrest for practical charging options. Enhancing the audio experience is the premium Burmester® surround sound system, now equipped with personal sound setup and Dolby Atmos immersive audio technology. This system boasts thirteen speakers, thirteen separate amplifier channels, and a total output of 590 watts. A newly available optional feature is the ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL system, which monitors air quality through air quality and fine particle sensors. With a two-stage filter concept reducing fine particles and other pollutants, the system intelligently switches between fresh air and air-recirculation modes based on the measured air quality.
Equipped with the second generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, the GLE and GLE Coupé are now brought up to date. This advancement enhances the digital and intelligent aspects of the vehicle interior, with significant improvements in both hardware and software: various vehicle and comfort functions are accessible through the LCD screens, offering brilliant display views. The sizes of the driver and central displays remain at 12.3 inches each. The central display is conveniently operated as a touchscreen. Furthermore, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now accessible wirelessly.
The driver and central displays provide a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing experience, presenting information in a structured and clearly defined manner. Users can personalize the appearance with a choice of three display styles (classic, sporty, discreet) and four modes (navigation, assistance, service, off-road).
Safety:
The GLE class stands out as an excellent choice for families, thanks to its comprehensive array of standard driver-assistance features. These include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, among others.
