The brand-new Ford Explorer EV is unveiled for the European market
Today, Ford unveiled the Explorer EV. The new electric model, which will be sold in Europe, has little similarities to the internal combustion-powered model with the same name. The starting price of the Explorer EV is roughly €10,000 higher, smaller, and has a whole new exterior and interior design.
The 4460 mm-long new crossovers are scheduled to begin rolling off the assembly line at Ford's renovated Cologne plant, where it presently manufactures the Ford Fiesta, in the middle of 2023. Due to this, it will face competition from everything from the Jeep Avenger and Mini Aceman to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Skoda Enyaq iV in the extremely competitive small and midsized SUV segments.
The Explorer is the first Ford EV to utilise Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform, out of the two officially confirmed. This is part of a relationship in which the US company reciprocates by producing VW-badged commercial cars in Turkey and South Africa.
Ford states that choosing proportions that put it midway between the Volkswagen ID 3 and ID 4 was a deliberate choice made to avoid directly competing with those two cars; nevertheless, it was not a requirement for Ford to use the platform.
Except for the foundational components that are provided by the VW Group, the Explorer is a wholly Ford product.
The Explorer, a European-focused, European-designed, and European-built electric SUV that channels the American spirit of the Blue Oval and was created to compete in one of the market's most competitive developing sectors, ushers in a new era for Ford.
